Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a group of tests that measure how well your lungs work. They include tests that measure how much air your lungs can hold, how much air you can breathe in and out in a minute, and how well your lungs transfer oxygen from the air into your bloodstream.
Your doctor may order pulmonary function tests if you have a lung disease, such as asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema. PFTs may also be ordered if you have a heart condition that affects your lungs, such as congestive heart failure.
The most common pulmonary function tests are the spirometry test and the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) test.
The spirometry test measures how much air your lungs can hold and how much air you can breathe in and out in a minute. This test is also used to measure the amount of air your lungs can expel in one second (the forced expiratory volume in one second, or FEV1).
The DLCO test measures how well your lungs transfer oxygen from the air into your bloodstream.
Both the spirometry test and the DLCO test are simple tests that can be done in a doctor’s office.
