The echocardiogram is performed by a sonographer. The sonographer will place a transducer, or wand, against your chest. The transducer sends ultrasound waves into your body. These waves bounce off of your heart and are reflected back to the transducer. The reflected waves are converted into images that are displayed on a monitor.
The echocardiogram is a painless test. You may feel a little pressure when the transducer is pressed against your chest. You may also hear a clicking noise as the ultrasound waves are transmitted.
The echocardiogram takes about 30 minutes to complete. You will be asked to lie still on your back while the test is performed.
Your doctor will review the images from the echocardiogram and will discuss any findings with you.
