An ankle brachial index (ABI) test is a simple, noninvasive way to measure the blood pressure in your arms and legs. The test is used to check for peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition in which the arteries that supply blood to your legs and feet are narrowed.
The ABI test is done by taking the blood pressure in your ankle and arm and comparing the two. A lower blood pressure in the ankle than in the arm suggests PAD.
The ABI test is usually done as part of a routine physical exam. It can also be used to help diagnose other conditions, such as heart disease and stroke.
The ABI test is usually done using a sphygmomanometer (a device that measures blood pressure) and a Doppler ultrasound device.
The sphygmomanometer is used to measure the blood pressure in your arm.
